Strange feeling swirl. Our efforts at communication can be both magical and way off base. Wild weather challenges transportation in many parts of the country. Our minds drift to our strangest hopes and fears or wander into moments of irritability and forgetfulness. Plagues of rabid bats roam the land. Well, not that last one; we can’t blame everything on Mercury retrograde, even if it is in its own nervy sign of Gemini, conjunct Mars and the Sun, and all square confusing, soggy Neptune, a pattern which can make this retrograde cycle (May 20-June 13) feel even more retrograde than usual.

What a wonderful time to write fiction, if we can tell fiction from reality, though reality itself might be plenty strange. Or we may just drift and putter. We can get lost in a bog of memories or chew on them for more understanding or just for the emotional high of intense feelings. But the theories we develop now about what actually happened can be layered with our own projection or self-doubt. Let memories surface, and let them flow away; our understanding of them will probably be distorted and our desire to hold onto them may really speak of a need for a break from the present. By the end of the week we have an opportunity to turn a corner towards the future.

This lineup (Mercury retrograde conjunct Mars and the Sun, all square Neptune) does call for some time out, time to work on project we love, time to read a book that takes us far away, or meander through the woods from the joy of our heart. Though it’s probably not a good idea to tune out and step off the grid completely. We can think erratically and speak sharply, and may need to stay involved enough to modify specious decisions being made in the body politic or at the family dinner table. Let’s be direct and honest, keep to the point, but avoid sweeping statements (we will regret them) and consider the consequences of our words.

We need this time out, but we need also to not drop the ball on important plans that are unfolding for the rest of the summer. So let’s see if we can take a few days here and there, a few hours every day to dwell in those other realms between the worlds, renew, revive, heal, and imagine. And also bring our attention every day to the details that need follow through to manifest the great plans unfolding later the summer.

Long longer trips may actually go more smoothly, especially trips back home, but local transportation can get snarled easily, keep an eye on weather and construction paths this Mercury retrograde. Electronic communication can have its quirks and force us to upgrade, but what looks like a problem at the beginning could bring a real improvement.

We may waft slowly through Friday in a hazy or confused mood as Mercury squares Neptune. The Moon then enters Scorpio for the weekend as the Sun squares Neptune and keeps us deep in our inner world. We can tap into deep pools of feeling, combine Gemini expressiveness and Scorpio’s ability to drill deep, and feel wafting existential loneliness underneath socially fluid Gemini. The combination can produce great music and empowered artwork, because we long to find soul expression.

We can have funny conversations about terribly dark and deep things, find unusual ways of helping one another, but may go back and forth between needing to be with people, and needing to be alone. Let’s make sure all of our needs are met. This energy can also be highly flirtatious and intense, with old loves and one night stands recycling; just don’t make the same mistake twice.

Next week brings a full Moon in Sagittarius rife with possibilities and nervous energy, and possible grand snafus along the way. It first sets off a grand a T-square in the morning (as it opposes the Sun, Merc, Mars combo and squares Neptune) then a grand trine the evening (when it trines Jupiter and Uranus). This full Moon in Sagittarius can restlessly dislodge us from old ruts, it asks us where we want to go and can opens up opportunities to get there. It can mark a turning point away from some sadness or failure in the past, where it may have been hard to see our options, and now offers glimpses of fresh roads opening up. We can use this full Moon to let go of an old obsession, habit, or relationship that has been draining our hearts and begin the search for more fertile fields.

Be kind to nerves and nervy people. Because of the cross-currents involved on this full Moon, we can feel scattered or pulled in many directions, feel one of every possible emotion, or feel confused as we stand at some interior crossroads. It’s a good time to support empaths and people whose psyches are frayed. On a practical level we may see crossed wires or crossed signals, arguments around education and foreign-policy, and water damage to transportation; all these bring an opportunity to take a deep breath and open our minds and hearts a little wider, and work a way around the problem.

The week ends on a more competent Capricorn Moon that might get a little cranky but can help us refocus our efforts.

Friday, May 29: Soggy conditions, overstimulated imagination, fuzzy thinking; our mind and heart can feel bogged down as Mercury squares Neptune this morning. The Moon in friendly Libra encourages us to socialize and connect, but we may just be a little irritable around the edges. Watch out for accidents and change of plans this morning, just stay aware as the Moon opposes Uranus. Kindness helps around awkwardness or relationship wobbles midafternoon as the Moon squares Venus, though our intentions will probably be good. Afternoon, if we can quit work early let’s do it’s not a focused organize time; social conversation might more productive than trying to keep our nose to the grindstone. Just watch the commentary as feelings can get hurt when we think we’re just being witty.

Mercury square Neptune 1 AM, Moon opposed Uranus 6:17 AM, Moon square Venus to 20 p.m. then Moon VOC

Saturday, May 30: Dark and light, deep and shallow, this day runs with extremes as the Moon enters focused and intense Scorpio while the Sun conjuncts Mercury in nervy Gemini. Feel the need to communicate but at the same time a deep need for privacy. Share where people are open, and respect “do not enter” signs. Come together for a cause or purpose; our short-term concentration is strong, we do well with a sense of purpose. Evening brings an opportunity to dream as the Moon trines Neptune. Notice what’s going on underneath the words.

Moon enters Scorpio 3:33 AM, Sun conjunct’s Mercury 10:55 AM-8° Gemini, Moon trine Neptune 10:30 PM,

Sunday, May 31: Lots of strong emotions but very little clarity this morning as the Sun squares Neptune. Let it be a meditation. Feel for that deep connection with spirit, the doors will be unusually open and the rest of life could be too confusing. Watch out for problems with liquids, water, things that flow. Take a flood seriously, and don’t be surprised by a flood of tears or laughter. A generous streak helps midday moves into healing opportunity tonight.

Sun square Neptune 7:07 AM, Moon square Jupiter 11:30 AM, Moon trine Chiron 8:26 PM,

Monday, June 1: Morning is a little slow and preoccupied, our thoughts still linger over personal emotional concerns of the weekend but we can find room to be compassionate with one another as the Moon trines Venus. Just watch for people’s prickly defenses, honor their personal space and rhythm. The momentum picks up this afternoon as the Moon enters more upbeat Sagittarius but circles back to serious plans, vows, and thoughtful moments as the Moon conjunct Saturn.

Moon trine Venus 5:01 AM, then Moon VOC, Moon enters Sagittarius 12:39 PM, Moon conjunct Saturn 4:20 PM.

Tuesday, June 2: It was the worst of days; it was the best of days. The Sagittarius Moon forms a confusing, nervous making, intriguing and mysterious T-square as it opposes Mercury, Sun and Mars all now in Gemini (from 8 to 12°) and all of these square Neptune (at 9° Pisces). At the best of this we can feel at one with the whole world. At the worst we can feel scattered and at odds with the whole world, or at least a little fried along the way. Unusual honesty is available and so are misunderstandings perpetuated in the name of honesty. When in doubt, it may help to be quiet, and listen with the intuitive nature instead of the very busy mind. At its peak midday we can feel pulled in many directions, but some of those pulls could be through unexpected opportunities. Choose to turn down a healthier road to more fertile territory. Tonight the energy shifts out of the uncomfortable T-square into a an easier, more exciting grand trine; the energy still buzzes but can bring a more lighthearted or optimistic direction.

Wednesday, June 3: Conversation is scattershot, everybody can be a little ADD, but let’s honor the urge to contact or communicate and build on common ideas and interests. When we work together we become more mobile and resilient through some interesting glitches. Afternoon is more disjointed; it may take a lot of attention to follow through on our work. Expect an urge to escape the countryside and let human concerns float away until evening when the Moon enters Capricorn and sharpens our focus but can bring in a dour edge.

Moon square Chiron 3:28 AM, Moon quintile Neptune 2:56 PM then VOC, moon enters Capricorn 6:50 PM

Thursday, June 3: It’s a good day for practical meetings with the purpose. We can get people to work together for specific issues, but it may take extra work and planning. We have to balance the need to plan and track carefully, with a need to relax and accept the fact that we’re not completely in control and things just won’t flow like we hoped. What seems natural may be blocked, and we have to hack a solution or work around the obstacles. Tonight brings a layer of emotional depth, and an opportunity to invalidate or validate our relationships, with the natural outcomes ensuing. Proceed thoughtfully.

We may all have our own personal version of Memorial Day this weekend as tender Venus in emotional Cancer opposed Pluto last night to stir our heart and retrograde Mercury brings our minds back to stories from the past. We may be painfully aware of the water that has flowed under our bridge and flowed away and need to honor an end of an era, a loss, a tough change, or loneliness– before we can shift gears as Venus squares Uranus later in the week, and celebrate summer’s life.

Not all is gloomy though, the surface energy can be light, witty and chattering, if a bit pointed, the Sun, Mars, and retrograde Mercury run together in verbal Gemini, a sign that encourages us to mind-map instead of outline, to synthesize rather than think sequentially.

This chatting may skim across the surface and give us a little privacy, or it can act as social lubrication and allow us to process stuff that is working on us at a far deeper level. Which we may need, because this weekend’s Venus-Pluto opposition can leave our hearts aching and wondering with emotional self-doubts or longing for missing places and people that once fed us.  Or it can just leave us a little moody and depressed, able to empathize with those who are going through so much. Wild weather, earth changes, and end of term have shifted the world around some of us, and Mercury retrograde may have put on hold plans or complicated our life with logistical tangles.

Friday asks us to be serious and catch up with unfinished work, check in with people who have authority over us, and prepare as the Sun opposes Saturn.  But the Moon enters Leo in the afternoon and starts that holiday feeling competing with these darker and deeper memories. Sunday the Leo Moon conjunct Jupiter beautifully in the night sky and encourages bounty, generosity, and a full picnic basket. It’s a good weekend to let community refill our wells.

Monday we may feel crosscurrents or be pulled in several directions as the Moon enters Virgo while Venus squares Uranus and Mars squares Neptune. Keep an eye on difficult people or military action in the news, and don’t echo that across the dinner table. There may be an unsettled, nervy quality about the day but most of us can channel this into home improvement projects

Legal matters further this week, it’s a good time to investigate an old crime or mistake and repair old wrongs or uncover a truth that was hidden. But we don’t need to do this at home; avoid the tendency to unproductively excavate the past in relationships or dredge up every time they ever committed the petty crime that’s now driving one nut. Speak up, but stay in the present, and stay very open to the idea that there is two-sided to this story.

Midweek we can feel rather critical as Mercury conjuncts Mars, but may not have the whole picture. So let’s not be too hard on others and ourselves but use this sharp-edged mind to get work done, refine the work already in progress and problem solve. Just keep checking and don’t go off half-cocked based on a misunderstanding. It won’t be pretty, and misunderstandings are way too common under Mercury retrograde. Be extra careful driving as impatience, misinformation, and lack of judgement can cause a pile-up. The week ends on a more emotionally connected, upbeat mood as the sociable Libra Moon trine the Sun.

Friday, May 22: Lingering moods from recent events or last night’s dreams can leave us tender and deep within this morning. Life may seem full of tough choices and strange twists of fate. Midday our efficiency wanders; it takes will power to finish up unfinished business and prepare for a holiday weekend. But that festive Moon picks up towards the end of the workday as the Moon enters extroverted Leo.  The need to de-stress and relax can make us all a bit loud and self-centered this evening- friendly and warm, but easily ticked off with anything in our way. And maybe feeling our age. Support one another helpfully, and we all get where we need to go faster.

Saturday, May 23: The harder life has been lately, the more we need a moment to renew. Today is perfect day off, meander, renew by listening to a soul’s wants, and indulge. If work needs to be done, get creative as the Moon conjuncts Jupiter.  It’s a tough day to try and stay efficient or travel quickly; keep the schedule loose, expansive, and with room for serendipity. Let that beautiful Moon– Jupiter conjunction pour into the heart tonight.

Moon conjunct Jupiter 10:05 PM

Sunday, May 24: It’s another low-efficiency, high sociability day, though a bit more ready to shift, experiment, explore.  We continue to be generally friendly, generous, but self-absorbed, as it’s time to return to self and fill the wells. Don’t expect others to guess what we need or leave their patterns for ours, and do try to honor the needs of others and take turns with needs met. Or the stubborn streak can cause a problem.

Moon trine Uranus at 4:49 AM, then VOC

Monday, May 25: Make a difference as the Moon enters industrious and nervy Virgo and lengthens our to-do list. Venus squares Uranus makes us itch for change, just do not try to change one another. If our situation has been either unusually uncomfortable or especially lovely lately, it may be tempting to make sudden leap sideways or to rail against one another and list everything others have done wrong. But it will be a lot more productive to deal with the issue directly in front of us and wait a few weeks, until Mercury is direct to make long term decisions. Better to put our existential discontent to good use. Move furniture and flowerbeds, talk about healthy changes in relationship, work on desired cultural changes.  Declare a self-improvement program. Sketch the tattoo, but wait to make it happen.

Tuesday, May 26: Stay calm through some early morning scrambling as the Moon squares Mercury and Pluto. Follow the details today; this is not a big-picture day, but one built on one small change after another. If we think too far ahead, our details fall through the cracks and we get overwhelmed. People may be cranky as they try to catch up, but the work landscape is shifting sands, always changing, and so a sense of accomplishment may be hard to find. That does not mean we are not getting anywhere- all these details are necessary.  Fix, repair, confirm. Reorganize.

Moon square Mercury 1:42 AM, Moon square Pluto 9:36 AM, Moon opposed Chiron 9:49 PM, then Moon VOC

Wednesday, May 27: We may be pressed for decisions today, but let’s not be pushed into an unripe or unnecessary one.  Watch for a sudden, irrational act. Bravely explore possibilities as Mercury conjuncts Mars, but keep the decisions short term, what we’ll do this week, not this year. We may need to do surgery, to cut out something unnecessary, or to bark, to firmly set a limit- but don’t need to bite or get mean.  Say no more than necessary, we think we’re saying it like it is—but with Mercury retrograde there is a good chance we only have part of the picture and will have to eat our words later.   Judicious honesty in the morning can lead to a healing, understanding, and righting of an old wrong or imbalance later as Venus trines Chiron and the Moon enters egalitarian Libra.

Mercury conjunct Mars at 4:36 AM, Venus trine Chiron 1:45 PM, Moon enters Libra 3:42 PM

Thursday, May 28: We can find our equilibrium again today, though may have to send out a search party. Make peace. Balance the composition, as the Libra Moon trines the Sun, Mercury and Mars. This helps us balance opposing needs and find healthy compromise, and maybe admit we might really love one another.

It’s a good time to return, return to ones we have loved before, return to a place that holds our heart, or return to a project we once put on hold as Mercury retrogrades for the next three weeks.

The past whispers to us and it’s time to take a break. Whatever we’re in the midst of doing may either be put on hold while we deal with a sidebar, another agenda other than our usual, this week while Mercury retrogrades, Venus opposes Pluto, and Mars opposes Saturn.

Mercury retrogrades (May 18-June 11) in its own nervy sign of Gemini, which both makes this Mercury retrograde cycle easier, because we can stay more articulate and verbal, and more difficult because all things mercurial may be unusually challenging. Mercury is further energized and scrambled by a square with confusing if inspired Neptune- which perfected last week, retrogrades back to perfect again May 29th, and hits again going forward on June 23.  Our memory, practical logistics, understanding what another person really meant underneath the words, planning, methods of communication and transportation, all may take extra ingenuity and attention for the next three weeks.

But at least will be able to talk about it. We can get lost in our imaginary world, though our spiritual life and creative process can blossom as long as we take care of our practicalities safely.  Conversation can be light and easy, though our thoughts may be troubled with memories and we may have trouble speaking in order and can forget the punchline of our jokes. Transportation could get confusing but can be an interesting adventure.

Mercury retrograde is most difficult at the turning points because Mercury is the planet of movement, and seems to resist even appearing to hold still. So really watch your p’s and q’s, your emails and your keys right around May 18 and June 11 and a few days on either side. After Mercury turns direct we begin to untangle our problems and beaten build momentum for the future, but we won’t be up to full speed and tell June 27, when we leave the shadow on the others. (See starcodes.wordpress.com/mercury-retrograde for more info)

As the weekend begins, handle life one minute at a time. Mars opposes serious Saturn, so this won’t be a frivolous time; we’ve got serious concerns or memories that need work, from our own recent past or from the depths of history.

The weekend centers around an earthy, warm, steady, if territorial Taurus new Moon. Things start to get screwy on Monday as Mercury retrogrades in Gemini under a Gemini Moon and energy begins to swirl in place. It is helpful to go back and finish unfinished conversations or pursue lines of inquiry we started earlier throughout the rest of the week. Venus, now in introspective and sensitive Cancer, can leave us more self- protective and introverted than usual, even on a bright Sunny spring day.

The mood grows bittersweet as creative Venus approaches an opposition to Pluto at the end of the week. We may be tempted to wallow with our ghosts; we’re reminded that to love risks losing, we may remember a disaster or note a concern for the future. This aspect reminds us to treasure what we do have, who we do love. Much that was lost can be found, but let’s not obsess about the past; instead, honestly process, compost, and prepare to rebuild.

Friday, May 15: Just a touch of attitude; Independence, bravery, enthusiasm, rebellion, and pugnaciousness are instigated by the Aries Moon as it trines Jupiter and conjuncts Uranus, just as Mars opposes Saturn and makes us even more resistant to systems. But our willful nature may be curtailed by our responsibilities, well-earned discipline, or a need to develop relationships with people whose authority we respect. So find a balance between independence and mutual responsibility. Don’t feel like it’s such an either- or opportunity. Give an earthy wildness some room to roam tonight, magic is afoot.

Saturday, May 16: The waning Taurus Moon and Venus trine Neptune pluck our heartstrings and encourage us to appreciate our surroundings and take gentle pragmatic action towards making our world feel more beautiful and peaceful. Whether we are gardening, creating, tiptoeing through the tulips or working in compassionate action, it is time to carry through an idea and gentle our world. Evening is cuddly and sensual, though we may be feeling a little bit more emotionally vulnerable than we admit.

Moon enters Taurus at 1:02 AM, Venus trine Neptune 12:48 PM,

Sunday, May 17: What appears lazy may instead be slow and steady in the body, and nervously quick in the mind. A day to either lazily putter in the garden or in other ways connect with the earth. Memories of old incidents which brought out our Taurus– our fondness, our possessiveness,  territoriality, our acquisitiveness, our ability to nurture– may come up for review; are these seeds we want to nurture or experiences from the past we need to plow under an release. History sits close with us before the Taurus new Moon at tonight. So do our hungry senses.

Moon square Jupiter at 1:44 AM, Moon trine Pluto at 2:37 AM, Moon conjunct Sun at 11:13 PM, then VOC

Monday, May 18: It’s a day of paradoxes; the new Moon begins new cycles but Mercury stationary in Gemini asks us to pause, hold still, think again and look for what we are missing. We’ll need some structure to our day, but frustrations pile up if we stick to a tight schedule.  So co-create the day with fate. If communication gets really haywire, plans misdirect, or we feel like we’re running around in circles, let’s hold still a minute, and move out of frantic Gemini mind to center down in the heart to proceed. Odd wisdom is found underneath.

Moon enters Gemini at 3:27 AM, Moon opposed Saturn at 6:49 AM, Moon conjunct Mars at 11:25 AM, Mercury retrograde 7:49 PM, Moon square Neptune 8:02 PM

Tuesday, May 19: The slower we go, the more likely we are to succeed. Watch a tendency to rev up and then end up running late from missed signals and other snafus. Stay closely in touch with one another and if unexpected delays occur, look around for the silver lining; talk to strangers and look for a surprise opportunity. Return to the scene if in mind only) of early joy, and reconnect with what worked. Catch up with one another in ourselves, and engage the unexpected twists of fortune.

Moon conjunct Mars at 2:06 AM Moon square Chiron 3:52 PM, then VOC

Wednesday, May 20: We may be a little self-protective shy or risk-averse, though that may come off as prickly or diffident as the Moon enters more tenderhearted Cancer.  It would feel good to be home and safe and out of the fray. For those of us that need to engage the world, let’s stay centered and keep our heart open but not lean into or invade other people’s space. Invite them to connection, but hold our own heart. Where we connect, we can find unusual imagination tenderness as the Moon approaches are trying to Neptune. The artistic muse can speak clearly if we give her time and supplies; help other people see the vision. Tonight we may need to mull over questions of purpose and relevance.

Moon enters Cancer 7:55 AM, Moon square the nodes at 9:33 PM

Thursday, May 21: Our feelings could be all over the place. So may be the flotsam of our life; it’s so easy to drop stuff and scatter all over the floor. The mood is funny (in the morning) jumpy, disconnected, retrospective and anxious, and a bit of an emotional puddle as the Sun enters restless Gemini and the Moon conjunct Venus in emotional Cancer as both opposed Pluto. We may feel like were standing at a crossroads and need to let go of a layer of the past in order to embrace future possibilities. After deep moods midday as the Moon opposes Pluto we could feel at loose ends and be tempted to change things too fast to be productive as the Moon squares Uranus.  Stay connected to the heart to make evening a healing time as the Moon trines Chiron.
