What does freedom mean to us? On this Fourth of July weekend, benevolent Venus conjuncts expansive, freedom-loving Jupiter, thoughtful Mercury sextiles it, and energizing Mars semi-squares Jupiter, and all these aspects will beg that question. We can appreciate a strong tribal quality this weekend, and need to think about where we belong. Are we thinking of the tribe of our insular family, our particular cultural and political niche? Or can we expand our tribe to include all sentient beings on earth, all our relations.

Because the planets like to work across the board, we’re asked to contemplate this question– what does freedom mean, what’s the cost, how do we guarantee others’ freedom as well as our own—every which way, on a political, economic, and spiritual level. Venus-Jupiter conjunct in expansive Leo and so suggests that whatever we do will tend to be on a grand scale. Communicative Mercury sextiles Jupiter and encourages us to discuss freedom in all its many forms. Mars challenges Jupiter and instigates us to us wrestle over opinions or play fiercely. This Mars-Jupiter aspect can also leave us prone towards accidents, so let’s be careful around flammable material, political topics, and personalities.

Right now our Sun is in an unusually active phase, it’s spitting out solar flares which energize our magnetic field and creates geomagnetic storms. When the Sun flares, the current aspects are energized and the volume turns up on history. The recent Supreme Court decisions are one example positive example, the European financial crisis less comfortable form. Statements or events may occur which can trigger a real shift in the course of fate. Everybody just gets excited, even the electrons, and will ask what they can use any help electrical others are broad and singing to us again as the northern lights shimmer near the polls.

This holiday weekend begins under a communal, picnic-oriented Aquarius Moon. We respond well to fireworks, a wonderful collective art form, parades, and all other events that promote community more than intimacy. It would be a good weekend to check in with friends who are housebound or isolated, and invite them along. We may enjoy the crowd more than usual, and even if we don’t feel like going, it’s nice to feel included. Just keep the agenda loose, because most of us will resist heavy expectations.

Freedom: watch that word bandied around by political candidates, the cost and gift of freedom. On a personal note we may see a rash of yard sales as people want to be free of excess clutter and memorabilia they no longer need to carry around. We may long to drop an old anger or clear our life of angry people, or find a way to free ourselves of the limiting self-doubt. Because the Sun and Mars are also in security-loving Cancer, we may be tempted to step away from a job or relationship that feels confining, but may not be ready to endanger our comfort. So let’s enjoy a break this weekend then work on how we can bargain and negotiate for a less encumbered, more spacious relationship or workplace.

On Sunday the energy turns paradoxically more muscular and more sensitive. Maybe it’s just a hangover from July 4 picnics, maybe we need a break, or maybe we need to chew on the deeper issues and costs of freedom. Monday is a day to sleep in and rest up, and contemplate the ephemeral quality of beauty as the Sun opposes Pluto. It brings us to the bittersweet quality of letting go. We will also feel rumbles in the background of discontented grumbling and potential saber rattling at the edges of a power-play. We can easily crossed signals and grumble at one another or at an imaginary slight. It’s an important time to hold our ground and insist on fairness for all.

Mars also trines Neptune this week and brings up questions around acts of faith, what can we do in the name of our faith, where are we using faith, philosophy, or religion to live by, and where do we use it to hide behind. Once we enter the Neptune realm, it’s not about logic. Let’s just own that.

Midweek the Moon enters feisty Aries just as Mercury enters touchy Cancer and amps up the charge on those questions we pondered over the weekend. Our histamines levels can be higher than usual so we react allergic to pollen, nasty people, and other irritants.

The aspects of this last week echoing in recent events have helped us reassess our situation and may clarify what we need to concentrate upon for the next few months. Rather than get depressed about this new awareness of the work ahead (though that may easy to do), we can use it as a strategic planning incentive and feel how much support is actually available.

Friday, July 3: A glitch or communication snafu this morning can bring up some old sore point or remind us of unfinished business. Later, the day smooths out though people start getting vacation mind early on, and it’s hard to complete or follow through. By dinnertime, when Mercury sextiles Jupiter, we want to be free of our mundane week and are ready to step out of the ordinary. We may not want to hear bad news or difficult logistics at the moment, so keep comments directed towards what’s needed for a positive outcome, and get more cooperation. It’s easy to open lines of communication as long as we honor the flow of conversation, take turns and make room in our cadence for everyone.

Saturday, July 4: The mood wanderers sociably, but we may not want to get too close, and we need to move in our own time. Meander the day away. Watch out for an opinionated, accident-prone or cranky phase early this evening; be careful with those fireworks and with a tendency to over-do. But we may have the capacity to enjoy a crowd more than usual, to feel the buzz of humankind, as long as we know our escape route if needed. The crowd’s fine, crowding is not. Lovely Mercury sextile Venus encourages camaraderie and more coziness late tonight.

Sunday, July 5: We can get both more sensitive and edgier today as the Moon enters intimate but easily- bruised Pisces just as Mars forms a challenging semi-square to Jupiter and brings out our pugnacious streak. Difficult relatives bring up politics, but not because they want an open discussion. One good way of using this energy to engage muscular effort on something sensitive and creative: garden, paint, and beautify surroundings. Be careful to not manipulate today, even if feeling emotionally needy and wanting others to cooperate to make one feel safer, manipulation will tend to backfire. Be honest and caring instead, and notice that gets better results. We may feel we have to make difficult decisions tonight as the Sun tangles with Saturn, if so, let’s set clean clear solid boundaries now so we can back off and be more open later.

Monday, July 6: Sleep in and drift away this morning as the Moon conjuncts Neptune in Pisces and trines the Sun. Later, notice a judgmental streak, towards self or others, and drop it as the Sun opposes Pluto. Be bigger than that. The holiday fog can begin to clear and we see the work, effort left that needs to be tackled in the months ahead as the Sun opposes Pluto. If we’re not judge mental to towards others, we’ll feel better about ourselves. It’s easy to feel inadequate or feel like we have too little resources to tackle the work at hand, but we can use this to focus efforts rather than just get depressed.

Tuesday, July 7: We may still be slow off the mark this morning, as if our brains are still on vacation even when our feet take us back to work as the Moon squares Mercury, let people be a bit squishy and amorphous. The mood changes around noon as the Moon enters edgy or Aries, we can feel the momentum pick back up, for better or worse. So let’s make sure we aim ourselves in a good direction, be creative rather than reactive. A hidden or delayed ambition knocks on the door and asks for some time. Tonight, were not feeling particularly cooperative, will tend to think other people are doing it all wrong, so really, we don’t need the help as Mercury quincunx Saturn.

Wednesday, July 8: We can make jerky moves or slight klutzy efforts to make progress but somehow will tend to drag our feet this morning. The situation may be more complicated than we think, even if we’re raring to go, as the Aries Moon squares Pluto. Mars trines Neptune and helps us let go of an anger and find our vision again, but we may need to move into a more forgiving place to free up the energy we need. Feels good to be near water, too put effort behind our craft are our. Tonight as Mercury enters cancer our story becomes more important.

Thursday, July 9: There’s some sweet and beautiful energy available this morning, we long for a more beautiful world and may be unusually willing to work towards that goal as the Aries Moon trines Venus and Jupiter. It could be something simple, but let’s take a step in that direction. If an opportunity cracks open, it needs to be seized now. We also want to feel an energy exchange with the people we know and love, so it’s important to greet our beloveds warmly and connect with them. However briefly, make it authentic and intense. If we feel ignored we will get ornery. The Moon enters more settled and sensual Taurus this afternoon as Mercury quintiles Uranus and leaves us a little edgy and nervous, but this energy can be turned into a special kind of genius.
